Cleaning and Care of Canvas and Caravan Porch Awnings

It you are a proud owner of a canvas porch awning or a caravan awning, you will need to make sure that you clean it properly. Most people seem to forget about any type of maintenance on their awning. Most likely, it is a job that can very easily be put off until a later time.

Well, let’s get started. Here are the recommended cleaning tips for your porch awning. The canvas material used for your awning is, in many cases, made of the same components of the canvas used in a caravan awning or caravan porch awning.

The most likely culprits that we need to remove are dust, mold, bird droppings and maybe spider webs. Every awning will collect some or all of these things, so don’t get worried about it as it should clean off quite well.

Please read this information before cleaning so that you will not accidentally damage your canvas material on your porch awning.

1. If you plan to wash your entire awning then spray it down with plain water from your garden hose prior to doing anything else. This will get off any dust or excess loose materials that may be on the canvas such as leaves or seeds that have blown on top of them.

*Caution: Do not use a pressure washer on this type of awning as it could wear off your protective sealer or even damage your canvas.

2. Use a mild soap solution. The type of liquid soap used to wash dishes will be the best type to use for this job.

3. Use only soft sponges or cloths to clean your awning. For stubborn stains or heavy mold, try using a soft brush that will not be too harsh when rubbing across the surface of the material.

Canvas sealer products

If you happen to damage the sealant that came on your canvas material, you can purchase a gallon of canvas sealer that can be reapplied to the material. Some products require the canvas to be completely dry, while others allow it to be partially damp. It is known as a Premium Water Repellent Sealer. Make sure the product says that it is for canvas materials, as some are only for wood products. This product is also great for canvas gazebos as well as canvas awnings.

For optimum years of service from your canvas awning, be sure to clean it regularly and if it is retractable, or some type of roll out awning, try to keep in reeled in when you are not using it. This will extend the life of your awning and keep you from having to clean more than you need to.
